Texas Basketball: 3 reasons why the Longhorns will crush San Jose State
Texas should dominate in the paint on both ends
Two players for Beard and the Longhorns that should be able to command the frontcourt in this meeting with San Jose State are the former UMass Minutemen star sophomore center Tre Mitchell and former Creighton Blue Jays standout junior forward Christian Bishop.
The junior versatile big man Mitchell responded well against Northern Colorado following an inconsistent game where Texas was convincingly beaten against the Zags last weekend. In the win over Northern Colorado, Mitchell registered a season and game-high 16 points, seven rebounds, one assist, no steals, and one block. And he shot 7-of-11 from the field, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and hit his lone attempt from the charity stripe.
Mitchell’s performance in the win over the Bears was one of the best for any Longhorns player this season. And San Jose State doesn’t really look to have anyone capable of defending him or switching to match up with him on the perimeter when he spaces the floor.
Meanwhile, Bishop is another Longhorns player that is doing really well out of the gates this season. Early in this regular season slate, Bishop and former Utah Utes junior forward Timmy Allen were two of the most important players in the forward/frontcourt rotation for Beard and the Longhorns.
Bishop is doing a little bit of everything for the Longhorns, and that should come in handy early on against San Jose State. He is just too versatile and athletic for most of the Spartans’ bigs to handle him on either end of the floor in this game.
