Texas Basketball: 3 reasons the Longhorns end Cal Baptist’s undefeated run
Cal Baptist doesn’t have the weapons necessary to break Texas’ defense
I do want to proceed with caution here as Cal Baptist does look like a team capable of at least giving the Longhorns a challenge if Beard doesn’t have his team ready to go on this night. Cal Baptist got a nice run through the Abe Lemons Classic from the likes of junior guard Ty Rowell and junior shooting guard/wing Reed Nottage.
In fact, Nottage is on fire of late. He had a game and season-high 28 points in Cal Baptist’s win over San Jose State last week. That’s parlayed into a hot start as a whole for Nottage so far this season. And the Lancers rode a solid night from Rowell in their last win in the Abe Lemons Classic, which came over Northern Colorado on Nov. 21.
The Lancers actually topped Northern Colorado by only nine fewer points than the Longhorns did. The transitive property is always difficult to translate in college hoops or football. But that could be an indicator that Cal Baptist isn’t a team to take lightly.
Nonetheless, if Texas is ready to go out of the gates in this game it doesn’t feel like the Lancers have the weapons necessary to break the Longhorns’ defense. Especially on the perimeter, Texas has the resources necessary to dismantle the Lancers.
If senior guard Courtney Ramey can keep his hot streak going on Nov. 24, then it could be a long night for Cal Baptist’s guards. Ramey was really good for the Longhorns in their win over San Jose State last weekend. He registered just eight points, but it came on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
More importantly, as it relates to this conversation, the Longhorns got another tremendous defensive outing from Ramey against the Spartans. In the last two games, Ramey has a whopping five steals.
