Texas Basketball: 3 new additions shining through the first 5 games
Timmy Allen, F
As the Longhorns wait for Disu to make his season debut (likely to come within the next week or two at the latest), Beard and his staff have to continue to be creative with the frontcourt rotation. But that shouldn’t be all that difficult to pull off given the insane amount of talent and depth present across this frontcourt unit for Texas this season.
Among the top players out of the gates for the Longhorns this season that is helping to easily fill the void of Disu in this rotation is the former Utah Utes two-time All-PAC-12 selection and senior forward Timmy Allen. As one of the most notable additions out of the transfer portal for Beard and the Longhorns during the offseason, Allen’s presence is paying immediate dividends for this team.
Similar to that of Mitchell and Bishop, Allen is doing a little bit of everything for this squad. There are even some newer developments in Allen’s game that are really encouraging to see early on. He’s shooting the ball better from deep and is hitting the offensive glass with a lot more effort and efficiency than ever before.
So far this season, Allen is shooting an impressive 57.1 percent from beyond the arc and has an offensive rebounding percentage just shy of 15 (both good for career highs). He’s also averaged around 14 points per game, six rebounds, two assists, one steal, and no blocks.
Just like Bishop and Mitchell have, Allen is putting up some astounding advanced metrics early this season too. He’s registered a career-best 11.0 box plus/minus, .295 win shares per 40 minutes, and a 28.4 player efficiency rating.
