3 key recruits impressed by Texas’ hire of RB coach Tashard Choice
Cedric Baxter Jr., RB
Running back is starting to come into focus for the Longhorns 2023 class as Choice comes into his role to replace Drayton. Texas does have a pretty insane pipeline of running back talent that has come onto the Forty Acres in the last few cycles. And that looks to continue with some of the leading indicators in place for the Longhorns 2023 class.
An emerging target to watch for the Longhorns that could be helped by Choice’s addition to the coaching staff is the touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. Texas did offer Baxter Jr. back in June 2021 when Drayton was still the running backs coach. But Texas was not gaining the traction with Baxter Jr. that Georgia Tech was while he was their running backs coach.
Now that Choice is on the Texas coaching staff, and will likely serve as Baxter Jr.’s primary recruiter, this program should be in a really good position with the Florida native. In fact, it is a really good sign that Baxter Jr. just included the Longhorns in his top seven finalist schools he released on social media on Jan. 1.
Even more notable is the fact that he didn’t include Georgia Tech in his top seven. That is an indication of how tight the relationship is between Choice and Baxter Jr.
There weren’t really any other schools that visited with Baxter Jr. more so than Georgia Tech while Choice was on their staff. The writing is on the wall now that Texas will be a real challenger to land the commitment of Baxter Jr. in competing with some Florida schools mostly with the likes of the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles, among others.
