Drew Sanders, Edge Rusher

A young and potent talent that the Longhorns could bring into the mix this offseason that could help with some of the pass-rushing woes is the former elite five-star recruit and sophomore edge rusher Drew Sanders. It’s clear that the Longhorns are prioritizing getting help off the edge in the transfer portal this offseason. That’s why it would make perfect sense if the staff does offer Sanders.

Much like there was with the pursuit of Watts out of the transfer portal earlier this offseason, there are plenty of ties that Sanders has to this coaching staff. That could create a connection to give something for Texas to work off of if they do decide to pursue offering Sanders now that his name is in the portal.

Sanders showed flashes of what he could become in the season that was for the Crimson Tide. He registered around two dozen combined tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, and two pass breakups. Sanders also finished up the 2021 campaign with nine stops, 10 quarterback pressures, and five missed tackles.

Texas offered former UAlbany edge rusher Jared Verse out of the transfer portal earlier this offseason for the exact reason of getting a boost in their pass-rushing efforts. With Verse likely headed elsewhere, it looks like a next move for the coaching staff could be to offer Sanders now that he’s in the portal.
