The depressing aspect about this stretch for the Longhorns in Big 12 play of late is the fact that it doesn’t feel all that different than conference play did under former Texas head coach Shaka Smart. While Beard and the Longhorns do have a bunch of big-time transfer portal additions on the roster, that’s not helping much in terms of success in the win column at the outset of Big 12 play.

It feels like the Longhorns are soon to be bounced from the major top 25 polls completely with the way they’re playing lately.

And one of the major reasons why the Longhorns are having a hard time of late getting on the right side of the win column is the lack of production coming from what should be a really stout frontcourt unit. Color me surprised that the standout frontcourt duo of Mitchell and junior power forward Dylan Disu is struggling so much in Big 12 play recently.

Yet, this is a problem that the Longhorns have to work through one way or another. I honestly think that Beard just needs to be giving Disu and Mitchell more minutes as they continue to work back from their various injuries. These two are often rhythm shooters that can get out of sorts when they’re getting limited minutes in weird spots.

Disu went 0-of-3 shooting from the field in just seven minutes off the bench in the loss to Kansas State. And while he was efficient against Iowa State, going a perfect 3-of-3 from the field coming off the bench, he didn’t get enough playing time to really help Texas seal up the win.

More than anything, the reason why Disu is on this list is the fact that he’s just not making a huge impact in the last four or five games. Since the outset of Big 12 play, he’s scored fewer than three points in three of the six games he’s played in. Two of the others saw him put up just six points too.
