Texas Basketball: 3 players dazzling in first half of Big 12 play
Timmy Allen, F
If you had to name a team MVP for the Longhorns through the first 20 games of the regular season as a whole, it would likely be the former Utah Utes transfer and senior forward Timmy Allen. The two-time All-PAC-12 Team selection is on a roll for the Longhorns in what could be the final year of his collegiate career.
Allen ranks in the top three in box plus/minus (8.9), win shares per 40 minutes (.239), and player efficiency rating (23.6), for the Longhorns so far this season. He’s also one of the team leaders in terms of on/off-court plus/minus per 100 possessions, at a +7.8.
His play since the start of the Big 12 slate hasn’t really slowed down either. Allen is still bringing a top-notch level of productivity to the table for Beard and the Longhorns through his first eight games of Big 12 play.
Through those eight games, Allen averaged around a dozen points per game, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and 0.5 blocks while shooting 53 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Allen is still truly one of the best rebounders, on-ball defenders, and elusive inside scorers in the Big 12 so far this season. His impact is greatly felt on both ends of the floor for the Longhorns in Big 12 play.
Another aspect of Allen’s game that is tremendously valuable for the Longhorns in Big 12 play is just how consistent he’s playing. Allen might be the most consistent player in the starting unit for Texas through eight games in Big 12 play. That is huge for Texas considering some of the time missed by junior standout center Tre Mitchell and junior power forward Dylan Disu.
