Texas has the guard play to top Texas Tech

We discussed how important the Longhorns top guard trio of Carr, Ramey, and Jones will be in this meeting with Texas Tech in Lubbock on the last part of the list. But it is crucial to note just how much guard play determines outcomes for the Red Raiders this season. In the games that the Red Raiders did fall short in this season, it was largely due to opposing guards going off on them offensively.

That was the case for Ochai Agbaji in the Kansas Jayhawks’ thrilling overtime win over Texas Tech last week. And it was also what happened with Nigel Pack and the Kansas State Wildcats in their home win in Manhattan over Texas Tech back on Jan. 15.

Texas doesn’t need all of Carr, Ramey, and Jones to step up in a big way in this game. But at least two-thirds of that group needs to come out with a really efficient effort on this night. It really feels like Carr, in particular, is one of the key factors for the Longhorns in this game.

An efficient night from Carr would be huge in the push for Texas to upset Texas Tech on the road. One of the worst losses of the season so far for Texas, which came at the hands of Kansas State at home, came despite a season-high 25 points from Carr. It’s hard to imagine the same thing happening for the Longhorns if Carr gives them 20+ points against Tech.

Texas is likely going to get steady production in this game from the likes of Mitchell and senior forward Timmy Allen in this game. It feels like where Texas can really move the needle in this one is with their top guard trio of Ramey, Carr, and Jones.
