3 players that immediately benefit if Texas hires David Cutcliffe
Maalik Murphy, QB
Knowing the track record and proven experience that Cutcliffe brings to the table in terms of the quarterbacks he’s coached up and developed during his more than 30 years at the college ranks, this position is the first that comes to mind that he could impact for the Longhorns. And the younger quarterbacks that need more polish at the collegiate level could be the ones that are really impacted starting this offseason by the potential addition of Cutcliffe.
This brings to mind the potential impact that Cutcliffe could have on the former four-star Junipero Serra quarterback recruit and incoming freshman Maalik Murphy. There’s a chance that Murphy could be competing for the backup job right away in 2022, depending on how things play out with sophomore Hudson Card in spring ball and fall camp.
As the lone quarterback signee in the Longhorns 2022 class, Murphy will have some weight placed on his shoulders right away to compete with this QB room. Granted, nearly everyone right now in the Texas quarterback room don’t have anything more than a couple of snaps in college. Card is really the only one that does.
Moreover, Murphy has a high ceiling and a ton of arm talent. But getting integrated with the college game and Sark’s offensive scheme can be a lot to digest for a freshman quarterback like Murphy that doesn’t really have a veteran mentor to learn under at the position.
This is why having an experienced coach with multiple decades of proven results under his belt to help ease the transition for Murphy and jumpstart his development on the Forty Acres.
