3 top Texas edge rusher targets currently in the transfer portal
Khari Coleman, EDGE
The biggest edge rusher portal target for the Longhorns that is recent to emerge is also a former Horned Frogs starter. Texas could really make a name for themselves out of the portal this offseason by targeting former Horned Frogs out of the portal. That at least looks to be the case with the likes of Mathis and former TCU sophomore defensive end/edge rusher Khari Coleman.
While the impact that Coleman made for TCU’s defense took a dip last season compared to the 2020 campaign, he still could be a true weapon for Texas to have in their defensive front.
Texas would be looking to recapture some of the magic that TCU found with Coleman during his freshman campaign in 2020 if they landed a commitment from him out of the portal this offseason.
Two seasons ago, Coleman registered nearly three-dozen tackles, a whopping 15 tackles for loss, three sacks, two-dozen total quarterback pressures, 25 stops, seven missed tackles, and one of the top 10 defensive grades in the Big 12 among all defensive ends/edge rushers.
Coleman is a former Freshman All-American that also looks to have a high ceiling if his next destination could really capitalize on his true potential. But he did battle some injury issues early last season that held him out of a few games.
Texas could still find a lot of value out of what Coleman could bring to the table for him. He is clearly looking for a better fit in terms of the defensive scheme than he would’ve found under new TCU head coach Sonny Dykes. Having the former longtime TCU head coach and new Texas special assistant to the head coach Gary Patterson on the Forty Acres could help the Longhorns make their case with Coleman here.
