It seems like one of the more under-the-radar options to watch among linebackers/edge rushers in the transfer portal ahead of the start of spring camp for the Longhorns is the former Vanderbilt Commodores sophomore linebacker De’Rickey Wright. While Wright isn’t going to likely have the biggest splash in terms of the appeal of his commitment out of the portal of any linebacker for Texas this offseason, he still has a lot of untapped potential.

Texas has some connections on this coaching staff with Wright that makes him a pretty safe option for them to pursue in the portal. That was definitely a route that the Texas coaching staff took in the portal last offseason too in terms of going after former blue-chip SEC recruits that Sark and his staff were familiar with (i.e. Ben Davis and Ray Thornton).

Yet, it’s difficult to tell how much legitimate interest Texas has in Wright out of the portal. Other names on this list such as Chandler-Semedo should probably have more appeal to the coaching staff than Wright. But the versatility and untapped talent here are going to still carry some level of appeal for the staff too.

Texas looked to have some initial interest in pursuing Wright once he first put his name in the transfer portal and he does have an offer in hand. The Pitt Panthers and Oklahoma State Cowboys are two other significant schools that have offered Wright.

But Texas is probably going to take a more patient approach with Wright and see what other options emerge. Wright could land on the Forty Acres, though, if Texas is ready to pull the trigger on him at the outset of spring ball.
