Sam Ehlinger and 4 best Colts’ QB options after Wentz trade
Mitchell Trubisky
Depending on which Colts fan you ask, potentially one of the least popular options as to who Indy could sign to be their Week 1 starting quarterback in 2022 is the former Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bears signal-caller Mitchell Trubisky. The one-time Pro Bowler and comedically-awarded 2021 NVP (Nickelodeon Valuable Player) has yet to find consistent traction with any NFL team in his first half-decade or so in the league.
Moreover, it would be interesting to see if Ballard, Reich, and the Colts have the confidence that they could rejuvenate the career of Trubisky. The Colts do look to have a much better supporting cast and coaching staff to help develop Trubisky compared to the situation he found himself in with former head coach Matt Nagy and the Bears a couple of years back.
The idea that the Colts could try and tap into the talent and potential that Trubisky brings to the table from what he showed during his time with the North Carolina Tar Heels is a risky one. The Colts just tried to rejuvenate the career of one former first-round quarterback in Wentz. And that didn’t end so well.
Thus, it would make sense that the Colts would try and avoid the risk of signing a project at the quarterback position such as Trubisky.
On the other hand, if the Colts are going to look to the free agent market for help at the quarterback position, there’s not much available at the moment. And some of the big-name quarterbacks talked about in various trade discussions this offseason are pretty expensive (i.e. Jimmy Garoppolo).
Trubisky wouldn’t be my first consideration for the Colts’ front office to find a new starting quarterback this year. But it isn’t out of the question that the Colts would sign Trubisky to a cheap deal and open up the QB competition between him and Ehlinger in Training Camp and the preseason.
