Byron Vaughns, DE/EDGE

This is something that we’ve talked about before on this site, but Texas fans should look back on the departure of the former underrated three-star linebacker/EDGE recruit Byron Vaughns as a big loss in hindsight. That fact becomes even more magnified when you take into account the fact that Vaughns just had a big breakthrough season with the Utah State Aggies and that he plays at a real position of need now for Texas.

Vaughns was a truly effective edge rusher/outside linebacker for the Aggies last season en route to putting up near-all-conference-caliber stats and winning the Defensive MVP of the Mountain West Conference Championship Game. Vaughns was definitely a player that continued to get better as the season moved along in his first year playing for the Aggies.

He really started to shine in roughly the last half-dozen games of the 2021 campaign, as evident by the numbers he put up during that stretch.

In his final seven games played of last season for Utah State, Vaughns registered nearly two-dozen quarterback pressures, four sacks, nine tackles for loss, three batted balls, one forced fumble, and more than 20 stops.

The numbers speak for themselves for Vaughns in the stretch run of last season. If he can just keep up the pace he was on in terms of productivity in the back half of last season, there’s no doubt in my mind that Vaughns will get the respect and recognition he potentially deserves as an All-MWC performer.
