Texas Basketball: 3 best transfer landing spots for Devin Askew
Nevada Wolf Pack
More of a wild card potential landing spot for Askew out of the portal this offseason could be with head coach Steve Alford and the Nevada Wolf Pack in the Mountain West Conference. Nevada does check a lot of the boxes that a player in the portal such as Askew could be seeking with his next destination. This just isn’t the first school that would come to mind for most when considering where Askew could land next.
Nevada is another school that is very close to home for Askew. The University of Nevada is located in Reno, which is roughly about a two-hour drive from Askew’s hometown of Sacramento, CA. And it also is within a reasonable driving distance from Santa Ana, CA, where he attended high school.
Yet, one of the main hurdles for Alford and the Wolf Pack pursuing someone that was a highly-touted four-star recruit coming out of high school just a few cycles ago is the fact that this program’s success seems to be on a downward trend. Nevada won about 62 percent of its games in Alford’s first two seasons at the helm (from 2019-2021).
Nevada bottomed out this past season, though, finishing up with a record of 13-18 (6-12 MWC). That was good for eighth place (also fourth from the bottom) in the MWC standings.
There are still a number of positives for Askew, outside of the proximity to home, if he landed with the Wolf Pack this offseason. Nevada would definitely offer Askew a shot to start immediately. Two of the guards that would be starters for Nevada next season (Grant Sherfield and Desmond Cambridge) are now in the portal. That opens up the door for Askew to start right away if he lands in Reno.
