Post-spring transfer portal wish list for Texas football
Craig McDonald, CB/S
One of the more underrated position groups in the transfer portal post-spring ball lies at safety. And that is partly due to all the younger defensive back transfers currently in the portal.
Rising redshirt sophomore defensive back and the former Iowa State Cyclones underrated three-star recruit Craig McDonald is one of these talented DBs that Texas should pursue in the portal in the near future. McDonald was one of the most productive and highest-graded freshman defensive backs in the Big 12 last season.
He could help shore up the depth in the secondary for at least the next few years for the Longhorns.
Zion Childress, S
An underrated Group of Five defensive back available in the portal that the Longhorns could seek out is the former Texas State Bobcats redshirt freshman safety Zion Childress. The physical and versatile 6-foot and 195-pound Childress was extremely productive for Texas State in the last couple of seasons.
He registered more than 130 combined tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one pick, 10 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in just over 20 games played in the last couple of seasons in San Marcos.
Rashad Ajayi, CB
Senior Colorado State Rams cornerback Rashad Ajayi is one of the most proven and experienced players at his position in the portal right now. Ajayi isn’t going to blow anyone away on the Forty Acres with his ability, but he is steady and consistent. That could be helpful for Pete Kwiatkowski to get more consistency out of his secondary this fall.
Ajayi has nearly 1,000 snaps in pass coverage under his belt for his career where he’s registered 18 pass breakups, one interception, and nearly 80 combined tackles.
