Marvin Grant, S

A safety target in the portal that the Longhorns appear to be interested in post-spring ball is the former Purdue Boilermakers redshirt sophomore breakthrough Marvin Grant. While Grant still has a long way to go in terms of his development as a cover safety, he’s already a very reliable tackler that has some real pop to his hits, and a smart defensive back with an excellent pursuit to the ball carrier.

That was evident as Grant ranked among the top five safeties in the Big Ten last season in tackling grade. Last season, he picked up nearly 80 combined tackles with just eight missed tackles. That is a solid campaign for a first-year starter.

Texas appears to already buy into what Grant brings to the table out of the transfer portal at the safety position. He could be a mainstay in the two-deep for the next couple of seasons at least if he winds up committing to Texas out of the portal this offseason.

Kaine Williams, S

A candidate for the most potent and talented young safety in the transfer portal at the moment is the former Alabama Crimson Tide blue-chip recruit and freshman DB Kaine Williams. Last week, Williams became one of the more appealing defensive backs to surface in the portal after spending just one year with the Crimson Tide.

Texas will have to get on establishing communication with Williams very quickly out of the transfer portal, though, if they want to have any shot at getting his commitment this spring. Williams is already in the process of taking some visits after entering the portal last week.

Williams has multiple connections to this Texas coaching staff. A few of the assistants (and Sark) on the Texas staff were coaches at Alabama throughout Williams’ recruitment. And second-year Texas safeties coach Blake Gideon was in the same role with the Ole Miss Rebels when they were recruiting Williams out of high school.
