Texas Football: Top 5 early 2024 NFL Draft Longhorns prospects
1. Quinn Ewers, QB
I get it that some might not have Ewers as a surefire first-round pick in the 2024 draft after his inconsistent freshman campaign last season. In fact, Walter Football doesn’t even have Ewers listed as a first-round pick in its latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft, citing issues with consistency as the biggest reason for his drop on the big board since the beginning of last season.
NFL Draft Buzz has also bumped Ewers down pretty far on its quarterback big board for the 2024 draft class since last fall. The biggest issues that NFL Draft Buzz mentioned pertaining to Ewers’ draft stock in the last six or eight months are his indecisiveness in the pocket and poor touch at times when he’s put under pressure.
A lot of the criticism concerning Ewers’ faults that he showed at times last season is fair. But I do think that some of these critiques are premature in terms of how far his draft stock dipped for some media outlets covering the NFL Draft.
Ewers’ pure arm talent, ideal NFL frame, and improving composure/footwork in the pocket make a more than convincing enough case for me to still include him as a first-round prospect in the 2024 class. You just don’t get the type of arm talent that can make all the throws all over the field with the type of zip on the ball that Ewers can put from really any other quarterback in this draft class.
Add in the fact that Ewers also is a functional athlete, and you get a prospect that has the potential to check essentially every single box that NFL scouts want out of a modern NFL quarterback.
A lot of NFL Mock Drafts and early big boards for the 2024 class project USC’s Caleb Williams and Ewers as the top two quarterbacks. Ewers fits the mold as more of the prototypical pro-style QB you see in the NFL Draft nowadays. Williams obviously brings that elusive element to his game.
But I think Ewers could be the top QB prospect in this draft class by making some of the necessary strides to be a more composed quarterback in the pocket this fall.
