Texas Football: 4 injured Horns players set to return for summer workouts
Jaylon Guilbeau, DB
One of the more mysterious injuries for the Longhorns entering spring ball was the situation surrounding sophomore defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau. The former blue-chip recruit and backup nickelback on the roster behind senior Jahdae Barron had it reported just before the start of camp that he could miss the entirety of the spring due to a lower-body injury.
In fact, Guilbeau has struggled with what seems like the same lower-body injury issue since he left the game in Week 8 against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Guilbeau’s injury led him to not even being a limited participant in most individual drills during spring ball.
The very good news in this injury situation for Guilbeau is that Sark specifically mentioned his recovery as a positive storyline heading into summer workouts.
"“I really do. I think every guy, when we come back for June and July, I feel really confident is going to be participating. I’m sure we’ll have a couple of guys that will be somewhat limited still. I’m think even about a Jaylon Guilbeau and where he’s at from that type of surgery. We won’t have anybody that is out, which is a positive thing.”"
It sounds like Guilbeau is well on track to making a full return for summer workouts, which is huge for the Longhorns. Guilbeau is going to need some time to work his way back after a lengthy absence due to the aforementioned lower-body injury that he initially suffered last fall.
He is an important part of this secondary as he was an early contributor as a true freshman at the star position last fall. Prior to his injury against Oklahoma State, Guilbeau took more than 215 defensive snaps. That was more defensive snaps than any other true freshman took through the first eight weeks of the regular season for the Longhorns.
In the absence of Guilbeau, sophomore Austin Jordan cross-trained at the star position during spring practice with the second-teamers behind Barron. Upon the return of Guilbeau, though, I would expect Jordan to return to his usual spot at boundary corner.
