Big 12 Football: 4 expansion options among schools wanting to leave ACC
Florida State
Another one of what are probably the two most valuable football brands in the ACC in the modern age of college football is the Florida State Seminoles. Florida State is one of the traditional powers in the ACC. And until the Noles came under some tough times on the gridiron in the last five or six years, Florida State was considered one of the premier college football programs in the country.
Similar to Clemson, if Florida State were to find a way out of the ACC, I would imagine that every major conference would be kicking down its door to get to the negotiating table.
In terms of the Big 12’s ability to make a realistic offer to Florida State get to the Noles on board, the conference would clearly be fighting an uphill battle. The SEC would probably be the most logical landing spot for Florida State if it were to leave the ACC in the near future.
But the Big 12 did just add a school in the same state as Florida State, UCF, to the conference starting in the fall of 2023. It would be interesting if the Big 12 could add another Florida school or two to start expanding more of a TV and recruiting presence in a state with as much talent and market value as Florida.
It’s also worth noting that Florida State appears to be on the up and up in terms of rebuilding this football program. Head coach Mike Norvell seems to have that program headed in the right direction after a 2022 campaign where the Noles finished up with a double-digit win season for the first time since 2016.
Florida State is projected by many major college football media outlets to be a top-10 team heading into the 2023 season. Another double-digit win season could continue the ascent of the Noles, thus making it an even more valuable brand if it does leave the ACC soon.
