Texas Football: Predicting Longhorns’ next commit after Melvin Hills
Corian Gipson, S
Decision date: July 22
Among the key targets for the Longhorns in the 2024 class with a decision date set, the top priority and highest-rated is the high-four-star Lancaster (TX) defensive back/safety Corian Gipson. The blue-chip safety out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is one of the top in-state defensive back priorities in the 2024 class for the Longhorns.
Gipson’s decision will boil down to Texas and the Clemson Tigers, with the Ohio State Buckeyes trailing in third place.
Neither Clemson nor Texas has a decided edge in the race to land a commitment from Gipson at the moment. Both schools had momentum with Gipson at different points this summer. Clemson was trending for Gipson when he officially visited the Tigers in early June.
Yet, when Gipson left the Clemson official visit uncommitted, that left the door open for Texas in this recruitment. Texas then grabbed the momentum from Clemson when Gipson made the official trip to Austin on June 23.
In the last few weeks, it feels like Clemson was able to make up some of the ground it lost with Gipson coming out of the Texas visit.
Texas does have a few factors working in its favor heading into Gipson’s commitment date on July 22. Johnson-Rubell, Gipson’s childhood friend, committed to Texas on July 1. Joining this class with Johnson-Rubell before the numbers start filling up makes sense for Gipson.
The Longhorns also hold the edge regarding the proximity to home for Gipson.
Robinson and Gipson’s decisions are two of the most anticipated of the month so far for the Longhorns in the 2024 class. If Texas can get both of them in the 2024 class, it will go a long way to keeping the momentum rolling on the recruiting trail heading into the fall.
