The streak is over for Texas Women’s Basketball after dropping a road Big 12 game against Oklahoma.

The #8 Texas Longhorns had a chance for 20 straight wins, but #19 Oklahoma won 74-73 in Norman to end Texas’ magical run.

The Longhorns fell to 21-5 overall and 14-1 in the Big 12 conference. Now, they have to turn their attention to the Baylor Bears on Monday for a rematch to decide first place.

Texas’ streak ended in the last moments of the game. With the score tied at 70 and four seconds left, Oklahoma’s Peyton Little nailed a three-pointer coming out of a timeout.

Oklahoma then stole Texas’ inbounds pass and made one free throw after being fouled. That was key, as Texas’ Alecia Sutton hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final score of 74-73.

And, like the Texas men playing at the same time, the Lady Longhorns were seconds away from overtime.

Texas Basketball Doomed By Fourth Quarter Sequence

Texas found themselves in an uphill battle against Oklahoma throughout the first half. But, they broke through at the end of the third quarter. Specifically, Lashann Higgs made a three-pointer at the end of the quarter to give Texas a 59-56 lead.

Texas quickly jumped out to a six-point lead, 62-56, two minutes into the fourth quarter.

But, freshman sensation Joyner Holmes picked up her third and fourth fouls in the first two minutes of the quarter.

After Holmes got her fourth foul, OU’s Peyton Little made a three to make it 62-59. And on offense, the Horns went dry from the field, going four minutes without scoring.

Then, Oklahoma led 68-64 with three minutes left. But, Brooke McCarty made a three-pointer to bring the Horns within one point. Texas tied the game, then took the lead at 70-68 with less than one minute remaining. But, Oklahoma scored five consecutive points to get the final advantage.

Texas Longhorns Dominated The Glass, but Oklahoma Still Won

If you just looked at the stats for this game, you would think Texas won.

The Longhorns grabbed a ridiculous 19 offensive rebounds, outrebounded the Sooners by eight boards overall, had 17 assists to the Sooners’ 11, grabbed two more steals, made one more three-pointer, and only had one more turnover.

But, Texas still lost by one point. Credit Oklahoma for making a few more plays that did not show up in the box score.

From Texas’ perspective, the key was Joyner Holmes only had an average game by her standards. Holmes finished with only 8 points against Oklahoma. The rest of her line was four offensive rebounds, eight boards overall, four assists, and two steals. But, she had four of Texas’ 15 turnovers. She also fouled out at the very end of the game.

Texas’ formula in Big 12 games has been running through Holmes with strong support from Brooke McCarty, Ariel Atkins, and other players. For 14 straight games, the formula worked. But, Holmes only took seven shots and two free throws on the afternoon while not reaching double figures in her key categories.
