2 studs, 1 dud from Texas's road win vs. NC State
Stud: Arthur Kaluma, F
Much of what senior forward Arthur Kaluma did for the Longhorns in this game wasn't all that sexy or flashy on either end of the floor. Kaluma did the dirty work for the Longhorns, dominating the glass on both ends of the floor.
He registered a season-high four offensive rebounds and a whopping 12 defensive boards in the win over NC State. I am very confident in saying that Texas not only would not have won the rebounding battle in this game against NC State without Kaluma's dominance on the glass, but the Longhorns also probably wouldn't have won the game.
The 16 rebounds Kaluma registered in this game tied a career-high for the senior forward.
Kaluma helped Texas get the edge over the Wolfpack in the battle on the boards by a margin of seven rebounds. Texas also had three more offensive rebounds than NC State, leading to nine second-chance points for the Longhorns.
Kaluma's huge night on the glass wasn't his only major contribution to the Longhorns' win over NC State. He also came up big defensively and helped to draw multiple fouls against key NC State starters in the second half.
Two steals and two other turnovers that Kaluma helped force against the Wolfpack player he was guarding nearly accounted for half of the turnovers NC State's offense registered. That's a huge stat since five of Texas's seven points off turnovers came from Kaluma's steals and forced turnovers on the defensive end in this game.
It's noteworthy that Kaluma drew a team-high six fouls, despite Texas's poor team free-throw shooting numbers tonight (7-of-14 from the charity stripe).
