2 studs, 1 dud from Texas's win over Delaware State
Texas basketball (6-1, 0-0 SEC) won its sixth game in a row in a convincing 90-68 victory at the Moody Center in Austin over the Delaware State Hornets (3-5, 0-0 MEAC) on Nov. 29.
Tre Johnson scores a team-high 21 points to lead Texas basketball past Delaware State
Since falling to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the regular season opener in Vegas a few weeks ago, head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns have found a spark on the offensive end of the floor. Texas has scored at least 89 points in each of its four victories at home at the Moody Center this regular season.
The Longhorns got off to a strong start to this win over Delaware State on both ends of the floor. Led by 10 points each from senior forward Arthur Kaluma and freshman guard Tre Johnson, Texas had a comfortable 41-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
This game for the Longhorns was handily won in the paint and with fastbreak scoring. Texas edged out Delaware State by a margin of 18 points in the paint and 10 points in the fastbreak in transition.
Texas did what it needed to get senior guard Tramon Mark, who made his season debut just a few games ago last week after dealing with an ankle injury at the beginning of the regular season, going on the offensive end. Mark scored a season-high 15 points off the bench against Delaware State.
Johnson also found his offensive game while scoring the ball efficiently against Delaware State, which is a major plus for the Longhorns before back-to-back Quad 1 contests next week against NC State and UConn.
Here are two studs, and one dud after the Longhorns' 22-point win over Delaware State at the Moody Center on Nov. 29.
Stud: Kadin Shedrick, C
For just the second time in his career at Texas, senior big man Kadin Shedrick posted a double-double in the Longhorns' win over Delaware State. Shedrick was a beast in the paint on both ends of the floor for the Longhorns.
Whether it was finishing around the rim with lobs, putbacks, and impressive post moves, or protecting the rim and gobbling up rebounds, Shedrick was at his best on both ends.
Shedrick was by far Texas's best rebounder in this game, posting a season and game-high 11 boards (including three offensive rebounds).
Regarding his efficiency and production on both ends of the floor, it hasn't gotten much better than what Shedrick was able to put up numbers-wise in this win over Delaware State last night. Shedrick did a nice job of finishing through contact and drawing fouls to get to the free-throw line. He made a season-high six of eight free-throw attempts against the Hornets yesterday.
On the defensive end, Shedrick was one of two players for the Longhorns who picked up at least one steal and multiple blocks, along with Kaluma (two blocks and two steals).
Shedrick said in the postgame press conference on Nov. 29 that Texas feels like it has found its identity and cohesiveness offensively but still has room to build on the defensive end.
"The identity that we really tried to build this month is definitely defense -- we weren't really happy with our showing today defensively. Trading baskets, going back and forth with them. We expect better of ourselves defensively. "
-Â Kadin Shedrick
He also stated that he is happy with how Texas looks with how "we can score in transition and at the basket".
