2 studs, 1 dud from Texas's win over Delaware State
Stud: Tre Johnson, G
Johnson stayed scorching hot on the offensive end of the floor in this game for the Longhorns against Delaware State in the 90-68 victory at the Moody Center yesterday.
In many ways, though, I think this was a stronger output offensively from Johnson against the Hornets than we've seen from him since the first two games of his career this regular season.
Not only was Johnson more efficient with his volume scoring efforts on the offensive end than he was in Texas's past few games, but he was also taking care of the basketball more effectively yesterday. Johnson has now scored 20 points while shooting over 45 percent while posting no more than one turnover in three games early this season.
It was also good to see Johnson's scoring efforts more evenly distributed over both halves of basketball in yesterday's win. Johnson scored in double figures in the first and second half, while making significant contributions as a distributor and on-ball defender in both halves.
He was active and aware on and off-ball on both ends of the floor in the first half, posting 10 points, five rebounds, one steal, and one block in the game's first 18 minutes.
Another aspect of this game that was very impressive for Johnson was his ability to command Texas's fastbreak offense. He was active to get out and run in transition, scoring a game-high seven of his 21 points in transition against Delaware State.
This game was further proof that Johnson is a special scorer that will only continue to round out his two-way game for Terry and the Longhorns in this system as SEC play approaches in a little over one month from now against Texas A&M on Jan. 4.
