Turn Up The Heat! Flanagan’s Thoughts From The Week
In this week’s Turn up the Heat! We breakdown the Longhorns win and talk about the week that was in sports.
Texas Longhorns Thoughts
– The Longhorns had a solid game, no it wasn’t a huge margin of victory but they still were in control of the game. It’s the first week of the season and you have to try to find something to criticize and people love drama. The only thing that was terrible was the field goal kicking and the lack of tight end appearances in the game. Jonathan Gray needs more touches and he will get them this week. I do want to see David Ash complete a really deep pass but I don’t want to see him force the ball. This was a good game, now let’s see a great game.
– Quick thought on New Mexico. I hate the triple option. Actually I really love the triple option but I hate when a team plays against the Longhorns with it. Its so tough to defend and they can hold onto the ball for so long so while New Mexico might not win, it might keep the closer than most expect.
College Football Thoughts
– Penn State must of been an emotional place on Saturday for alot of fans that had nothing to do with child molestation and the coverup. But with the loss to Ohio in Happy Valley, reality sets in for how hard and long this rebuilding process will take. The Paternos being at the game wasn’t as big of a distraction as I thought it would be but I don’t think it is the proper time to show yourself at Penn State football events.
– Former Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis didn’t have an impressive first game with the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes beat Northern Illinois 18-17 in Soldier Field. The Hawkeyes looked even worse on offense than they did last year. I really don’t think Greg Davis really has the stuff to be an elite offensive coordinator in college football ever again.
– 84-0? Really? What am I suppose to learn about that game Cowboys?
– Alabama went out and played with a chip on their shoulders. They really didn’t need to but I must say Nick Saban is one of the greatest coaches of all time in college football. At the time, Mack Brown was the best available coach but I can’t argue with 3 national championships. He is a living legend in college football.
– Thinking about that, I see Charlie Strong is a very good coach and he will get a big time job, but does he have that swagger needed to be an amazing coach? I think when Mack retires, the list should be Charlie Strong and Manny Diaz. That’s it. Maybe Dan Mullen on that list as well.
Major League Baseball thoughts:
– The Nationals are really going to shut down Strasburg and I can’t agree with it one bit. Sure his health is paramount but you have a legitimate chance to win a championship this year. Think about all the talented teams the past 5 seasons, the Red Sox only won 1 in 2007 and are rebuilding. The Phillies won just 1 in 2008 and they are looking to rebuild. These were teams that thought they were set up for multiple runs at a world series and in the past 5 seasons, got to the World Series only once. The Cardinals from 1996 to 2005 went to playoffs 6 times. During those 6 playoff appearances, we went to the NLCS 5 times and only went to the World Series once. Then in 2006, everything came together and the Cardinals won the World Series, then didn’t make the playoffs till 2009 where they got swept by the Dodgers. Then they make it back in 2011 and things once again fell into place. The Texas Rangers had the more talented team both years but lost. You can’t take any year for granted and that’s what the Nationals are doing.
– The Wild Card race is as wild as it has ever been. It’s great that all the races for the most part are still up for grabs. Got to love September baseball.
National Football League thoughts:
– Giants-Cowboys on Wednesday night? Can’t wait. I want to see the Cowboys give it all on the field and to show that they can compete for an NFC East title. The secondary will have to step up and prove that they are ready for primetime.
