This new feature from Hook’em Headlines called Instant Breakdown. In this post, we will break down the game against the Texas Longhorns and New Mexico Lobos.

1st Quarter

Texas won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. A weird coin flip where the referee had to flip the coin again because he couldn’t see the first time he flipped the coin.

The ball is in the air and the special teams stop the Lobos at the 12 yard line.

The defense is giving up alot of big runs. I understand this is a tough offense to stop in a short time to prepare but some of those runs are unacceptable. They seem to be adjusting now inside the 40 yard line. Got a 3rd and 12 and Holbrook throws the ball away for 4th and 12. Deciding to go for it I guess but instead take a Delay of Game penalty and punt it out of the endzone.

Texas takes over possession at their own 25 yard line

Texas on it’s first play decides to go deep but overthrows Mike Davis. The next play Ash throws in the flat to Joe Bergeron for a 22 yard gain out to the Texas 42. Great play by Ash to check it down and Joe to make more out of that play. After a 4 yard run, Ash dumps it off to Bergeron again for a 5 yard gain to midfield with a 3rd and 1. Tried a fade route to Shipley and was broken up by New Mexico. 4th and 1 Texas is deciding to go for it. Ash rolls to the right and decides to tuck it and run and get some blockers downfield and gets the touchdown.

Touchdown Texas 7-0 (David Ash 49 yard run, PAT good)

Texas kicks the ball off into the endzone for a New Mexico touchback. Texas needs to have a better defensive series here. Shut New Mexico down.

New Mexico starts at the 25 yard line, first play was an option left and the Longhorns didn’t stick to their assignments. New Mexico got the first down in 2 runs. On the next play,  New Mexico runs the playaction and Holbrook dumps it off to the running back for a 5 yard gain. Then another option play to the fullback and gets 4 yards. 3rd and 1 at midfield and Holbrook, the New Mexico senior QB, picks up 3 yards and the first down. The next play, another triple option but the QB didn’t have his pitchman and ran the ball for no gain. New Mexico is a little lost on the field and has to take a timeout.

After the timeout, the Lobos attempted a pass but was tipped but ran the option again and got the first down. After two dive runs that got only 1 yard, it’s 3rd and 9 and Bob Davie has to call timeout. The Lobos are trying to keep the Longhorns off the field. The defense needs a stop here. 3rd and 9 and they complete the pass for a first down. This option is killing the Longhorns. 3rd down conversions for New Mexico is 4/5. Not good.

BIG sack by Jackson Jeffcoat. Big time stop. 3rd and 21. New Mexico gets a false start penalty which backs them up to a 3rd and 26. Then dump off the ball to the running back for a 2 yard gain. Punt for New Mexico gets blocked!! Texas get the ball at the New Mexico 41 yard line.

Texas Longhorns takes over at the New Mexico 41.

On the first play, David Ash throws it out to Daje Johnson for a 9 yard gain. And the cannon goes off for the end of the First Quarter.

End of 1st Quarter: Texas 7 – New Mexico 0

Thoughts on first quarter: They have to stop the option. New Mexico had the ball for 12 minutes. That’s unacceptable. The defense has to take some chances and they seem to do that inside their own territory. But Texas has the momentum, need to take advantage.

2nd Quarter

The first play David Ash throws the ball short and almost got picked off. But they run the WildHorn with Bergeron and get two yards and the first down. Then the next play, Bergeron runs for a 2 yard gain up the middle. Another run up the middle and the Longhorns get 4 yards. 3rd and 4 on the New Mexico 21. New Mexico brings the house and David Ash gets hit and throws away the ball. Not one of them were picked up by Cochran. Field goal unit is out there for a 38 yard field goal.

38 yard field goal by Nick Jordan is good. Texas leads 10-0.

Kickoff goes out of bounces. 1st and 10 and the 25 yard line. The first play is a pass to the sidelines for an 8 yard gain. Too many men in the backfield backs the Lobos up 5 yards for a 2nd and 7. Holbrook breaks another big run and gets leveled by Quandre Diggs and he is down. Holbrook gets off the field on his own and the next play, a dive up to middle for 10 yards to midfield. Next play is another dive but Texas’s defense stuff that run. 2nd and 8 at the Texas 46. Another option and he pulls the ball out and get 9 yards and another first down. The next play they drop the freshmen QB for a 3 yard loss. The next play was a playaction and thrown short as an incomplete pass. A delay of game pushes the ball back to a 3rd and 18 and Quandre Diggs intercepts the ball. Bob Davie wants a review, he thinks the ball touched the ground.

Call Stands and Texas takes over.

Texas is just consistently moving the ball down the field well into New Mexico territory but stalled for a Field goal. The 46 yard field goal is no good. Still 10-0 Texas.

Alright Defense, need a big stop here to get the ball back.

The Option is just gashing the Longhorns. Another first down and New Mexico is running it very well. Another dive for 3 yards. That is just money for New Mexico. Fumble on 2nd and 7 but New Mexico recovers. 3rd and 12 on New Mexico 40 and they go outside and get about 4 yards but an unnecessary roughness penalty takes it back to the 28 yard line. 3rd timeout used by New Mexico.

The punt return by Diggs was huge for the Longhorns. 1st and 10 inside the 30 but a false start by DJ Grant backs it up to the New Mexico 32 yard line. A huge sack by New Mexico and a loss of 10 yards. 2nd and 25. Ash finds Shipley for a 14 yard gain. 3rd and 11. Ash throws to Goodwin for a 12 yard gain. Great throw by Ash. 1st and 10 and again New Mexico gets pressure on Ash. Ash fumbles the ball and a 6 yard loss. Then a screen pass on 2nd and 16 and gets nothing. The Offensive line is getting hammered and can’t make any blocks. 3rd and 16 and offensive line holds up well and Mike Davis catches the ball, great block by Goodwin on the edge and Davis takes it all the way to the house. Touchdown Texas!! PAT Good.

22 yard completion from Ash to Davis for a Touchdown. Texas 17 – New Mexico 0.

Texas kicks off the ball, stops them inside the 20. New Mexico runs down the clock.

Halftime: Texas 17-0

Halftime Thoughts: Offensive line needs to do better. Defense needs to stop those Option dives better and not take the QB for granted because the QB has gotten free many times. On first downs, New Mexico has been doing well. The Linebackers need to stay on assignments because right now, I would give them a D. But considering the Longhorns have only had the ball for 10 minutes, the offense has been efficient.

3rd Quarter

New Mexico kicks the ball out of the endzone.

1st play of the Second Half is a run outside for 4 yards. Then another run for 3 yards by Bergeron. Then a Jonathan Gray sighting and get an 8 yard gain to the outside for a first down. But miscommunication leads to David Ash calling a timeout. 1st and 10 and Daje Johnson gets 4 yard out on the left side. Then on 2nd and 6, a bubble screen gets the first down. Then the next play, Daje Johnson gets the quick shovel pass from Ash 45 yards for the Texas Touchdown.

Touchdown! David Ash 45 yard shovel pass to Daje Johnson. PAT Good. Texas up 24-0

Kickoff is short of the endzone and New Mexico brings it out to the 22 yard line. Cole Gautsche goes deep but the pass is incomplete. New Mexico runs down the clock again and has to call another timeout. 2nd and 10 is a pitch to the outside and it is stuffed. On 3rd down, a couple of missed tackles but they stop the pitchman. 3 and out for the Lobos. Punt is 52 yards and their was a holding on the play which backed up the longhorns to the 11 yard line.

The first play is a quick pass to Mike Davis for 4 yards. The second play was a toss that got a yard. The 3rd and 5 play when to DJ Grant (Shocking I know) for a 17 yard gain. Another quick pass to DJ Monroe and the pass went for 4 yards. On 2nd down, Ash gets the ball out and luckily wasn’t sacked. Then Ash threw it to Bryant Jackson for a 20 yard gain on 3rd down. Then a quick snap and Bergeron runs for 9 yards. Then another Bergeron run for 12 yards to the New Mexico 21. Then Ash throws to Shipley who does a nice fake out of the defensive back for 16 yards and a 1st and goal. Then Joe Bergeron runs for 4 yards and down at the 1 and Bergeron finishes the drive off.

Touchdown Texas! Joe Bergeron 1 yard rush. PAT Good. Texas 31-0

The kickoff goes right to the 1 yard line and the Special teams shuts the door and New Mexico will start at the 11 yard line. Cole Gautsche keeps the ball on 1st down for a 5 yard gain. Then a speed sweep by the Lobos for a 9 yard gain and a first down. Then New Mexico gets a false start penalty making it 1st and 15. Then the Lobos run to the right for a 7 yard gain. Then a dive play that goes nowhere and it is now 3rd and 9. On the 3rd and 9 play, the QB keeper goes for 11 yards and a first down. Unacceptable by the defense. Then the next two plays are for a loss with one being a bad snap. 3rd and 13 is a dive and a gain of 1 yard. And that is the end of the 3rd Quarter.

3rd Quarter thoughts: Much better by the defense but that one 3rd and 9 play was unacceptable. Offense is strong and they are asserting themselves. Good quarter by the Texas Longhorns.

4th Quarter

The Punt takes a Longhorns bounce to the Texas 37 yard line.

Case McCoy is entering the game at this point. First play is offtackle run by Jonathan Gray for 1 yard.  The next play was an incomplete pass to Shipley. 3rd and 9 and McCoy gets pressured and throws the ball away. Alex King comes into punt and hit a 53 yard bomb but it is returned for 8 yards.

The first play for New Mexico was a dive and it was good for 2 yards. The next play was a rollout pass that was incomplete and on 3rd down was a hit on the QB and the ball comes loose and Texas recovers the fumble. 1st down and 10 on the New Mexico 18.

The first play was a run up the middle with Jonathan Gray for 1 yard. Then the Longhorns run the Wildhorn and Grayh runs it for no gain. On 3rd down, McCoy passes to Jeremy Hills and he picks up 10 yards. Then in the WildHorn, Gray hands off to DJ Monroe and Monroe runs over a defensive back for the Texas Touchdown!

Touchdown Texas! DJ Monroe 6 yard run. PAT Good. 38-0 Texas

The kickoff is 3 yards deep in the endzone and New Mexico takes it out and Dalton Santos just levels him. A false start by New Mexico makes it 1st and 15. Then New Mexico ran the ball on a 6 yard dive. Then on a rollout they miss the pass. On 3rd and 9, the Lobos make a huge run up to their own 30 yard line. Unacceptable run but I think that was second team defense. Then 3 straight dives it looks like by the Lobos only gain 6 yards and New Mexico has to punt the ball.

Texas takes over at their own 18 yard line. First play is a shovel pass to Daje Johnson for 12 yards. Then Case McCoy rolls out looking for an open receiver but runs for 6 yards to the Texas 36. On 3rd and 2, Gray runs the ball for 22 yards.

UPSET!! LOUISIANA-MONROE BEATS ARKANSAS.

Wow that was an amazing play for ULM to beat Arkansas. But Case McCoy throws over the middle to John Harris for 17 yards to the New Mexico 28 yard line. Then Kendall Sanders makes a great catch to the 13 yard line. Then MJ McFarland makes a huge 13 yard catch for the Texas touchdown!

Touchdown Texas! MJ McFarland 13 yard catch from Case McCoy. PAT is good. Texas 45-0

New Mexico gets the ball but this game is over in my books.

Final thoughts: Huge win by the Longhorns. A much needed blowout win. Now Texas has to go on the road to Ole Miss which will be a decently tough road trip. But if the Longhorns handle their business, they should win.
