Linebackers

The linebacking corp loses two key contributors from the 2013 team. Gone is two-time All-American Kyle Van Noy. The Cougars also lost Uani ‘Unga, who is BYU’s all-time single season tackle leader. There is talent in this group. Alani Fua will replace Van Noy at outside linebacker. Fua had 63 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions last season. Fua had seven tackles and two sacks versus Texas last season. Bronson Kaufusi moves from the defensive line to weakside linebacker to help shore up the group. Manoa Pikula moves into the starting lineup as the outside linebacker.

Even with Van Noy and ‘Unga gone, this group is still formidable. This won’t be a walk in the park for the Longhorn offense. Mendenhall knows how to get the most out of his players. Even so, Texas ran for 132 yards against this group before abandoning the run when the score became lopsided. Shawn Watson will test this group early in hopes of establishing the run and keeping BYU’s own powerful run game on the sidelines.
