Texas Football: 5 Most Important Freshmen for the Longhorns in 2016
By Tyler Brett
Quarterback has been a position of need for Texas every season since 2009. Can Shane Buechele finally bring some stability to the position and become a leader of the Longhorn offense?
Every offseason, it seems, Texas turns to a new face to be the savior of the quarterback position. Two years ago, it was Tyrone Swoopes. Last year, Jerrod Heard was the man. But neither player has proven capable of taking this Texas offense to the next level, evidenced by the Longhorns’ dreadful offensive output under Strong.
Buechele enrolled early at Texas and made his mark on spring practices. He showed a comfort level in Sterlin Gilbert’s new offense that far surpassed the more experienced QBs on the roster. During the spring game, he threw for 300+ yards as he dazzled onlookers and set himself up as the frontrunner in the quarterback derby heading into the summer.
By all accounts, he has done nothing to lose that position during fall camp. He’s distinguished himself as a leader in the locker room while making every throw the coaches ask him to on the practice field. While he continues to split reps with Swoopes, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Buechele will win the starting job for the season opener against Notre Dame.
Then, the real work of resurrecting Texas football begins.
