1. Shane Buechele, QB

At the end of the day, it’s all about the quarterbacks. Texas has been searching desperately for a quarterback to take control of this offense since 2009 and may finally have found him in true freshman Shane Buechele.

Buechele enrolled early at Texas and turned heads in the spring game where he threw for over 300 yards in Sterlin Gilbert’s new offensive attack. Since Colt McCoy graduated, a Texas quarterback has thrown for 300 yards 11 times in 76 games. Tyrone Swoopes, who Buechele is still competing with for the starting job, did it just three times when he was the starter in 2014. While it was just a spring scrimmage, you can see why there’s buzz around Buechele that he surpassed 300 yards the first time fans saw him.

Beyond that, coaches have raved about the young man’s work ethic and leadership in the locker room. He commands the huddle like someone with a lot more experience and doesn’t act like he hasn’t taken a collegiate snap yet. Those intangibles have already made him a leader in the clubhouse and could be a difference-maker on the field during the season.

Charlie Strong has proven he isn’t afraid to start true freshman and Buechele could be the next young man to get the nod. If he does, the weight of Texas football will be on him.

Will these Longhorns be enough to get Texas back to their winning ways in 2016?
