3. Explosive Plays on Offense

Last year, Texas was one of the least explosive offenses in the country. Their inability to create big plays (in addition to their struggles to sustain drives) made it difficult for them to generate offense. In fact, Texas was last in the Big 12 in 2015 for plays over 10 yards.

Gilbert’s new offense should help to alleviate that issue. Texas’ focus this season is on getting their playmakers into positions to make big plays, whether that’s by opening up running lanes for the Smash Brothers, throwing it over the top to John Burt, or in space to one of the Horns’ other speedy receivers.

Creating big plays has to be a priority for Texas in this game. If they can’t get yards in bunches, they’ll find it extremely difficult to generate any offense. This offense has the playmakers to really open things up in 2016. They’ll need those big plays to pull off this upset.

If the Horns can’t break open the game with explosive plays, their chances of winning this game will take a serious hit.
