The defense, while much improved, still has work to do to be an effective group.

At every level, this defense looked faster and more confident than they did last year. Malik Jefferson was all over the field and applied some key pressure in big spots as he posted six tackles with one sack. The defense flashed the ability to be an elite group on a number of plays.

Other times, not so much. On the night, Texas allowed 444 yards of offense, including 206 yards rushing. DeShone Kizer had great success, completing 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards while rushing for 77 yards and accounting for six total touchdowns. While the defense came up with some big stops, they failed to create a single turnover.

The good news is that this is a young, inexperienced defense that is only going to get better with time. As this group gels, their talent level is going to make them formidable. They showed on Sunday what they’re capable of but also showed their inexperience. Playing more consistently will be key to turning this one win into a winning season.
