On some level, of course, Texas football always matters. But for the last several years, they have not made an impact on the national scene and have been an afterthought in the Big 12.

After last night, that is over. The Longhorns took to a national stage against a national brand and showed they could go toe-to-toe with anyone with a phenomenal game. DKR set a new attendance record for this game and the environment in the stadium was electric. Nobody was in their seat as the game came down to the wire and the whole place erupted when Swoopes sealed the deal in double overtime.

Beyond that, Texas is getting the positive attention they’re used to. There aren’t any questions today about what’s wrong with Texas football or when Texas football will return to their winning ways. Everyone today is talking about how great it is that Texas is back.

While this was just one game and the team will need to win many more to truly be “back,” there is no denying the impact of this win. Texas matters in the Big 12, in the Top 25, and beyond. By beating Notre Dame, the Longhorns have ushered in the return of Texas football.

Now, we’ll have to see if they can bring it home the rest of the season.
