Sometimes, it’s all about the fundamentals. Unfortunately for Texas, it’s been the most basic fundamental of defense, tackling, which has been eluding them. If they could fix that, a lot of their other issues would take care of themselves.

Against Oklahoma State, the Longhorns missed a ridiculous 30 tackles by 16 different players. So it’s not an isolated problem. Everyone is missing tackles and they’re all missing more than one. Those missed tackles become big plays which turn into points and Texas does not need any help giving up points right now.

Strong built up his coaching reputation on the defensive side of the ball, so we know he can run a tackling drill or two. While there are plenty of people talking about the scheme or the players, Texas’ issues on defense could be helped out tremendously if they just started tackling better.

What will that take, though? New drills? Shakeups in the starting lineup? Promises of ice cream for players who don’t miss any tackles? All options are on the table.
