Sometimes the best answer is the most simple. If Charlie Strong can start winning games, it will be the best thing he can do for his job security. You can’t fire a guy who is finally producing on the field, right?

When rumors began swirling about Strong’s job security, eight became the magic number. According to rumors, eight wins was what it would take to save Strong’s job. With seven games left to play in the regular season, there are still nine potential wins on the the table for this season (plus a bowl game). To get to eight wins, he just needs to win six of seven. If he gets the bowl game, he only needs five of seven in the regular season.

That will be a struggle, however. Texas has a difficult schedule coming up with road games against Kansas State and Texas Tech with home dates against Baylor, West Virginia, and TCU still upcoming. These are no gimme games. Texas will have to play some inspired football beyond anything they have brought so far this year. Even then, they’ll probably need a little luck.

With so many difficult matchups upcoming, it won’t be easy for Strong to win out or get to that magic 8-win mark. If he can, though, it will only be a more powerful testament to his ability to coach this program and would put him on rock-solid ground moving forward.
