Defensive Backs – Kobe Boyce, Josh Thompson, and Montrell Estell

Texas wanted three more DBs to really make this a DBU-worthy recruiting class. However, Texas settled for three really good defensive backs.

Montrel Estell played WR and safety in high school, but he will likely stick with the defensive side of the ball at Texas. In high school, Estell was a ball hawk. In 2015, he recorded six INTs and returned three for TDs. Now that Dylan Haines has finished his Texas career, Estell will have a chance to earn one of the safety positions in 2017.

CB Josh Thompson looks and feels like a great DB in Texas history, Earl Thomas. Thomas played safety, but Thompson is built like him and he has great speed to break up passes and grab INTs. There are so many CBs currently on the Longhorns roster, but with a fresh start from this coaching staff, Thompson could see playing time during his freshman season.

Finally, Kobe Boyce is the type of recruit who could be a difference-maker once he gets in the Longhorns’ strength and conditioning program. Boyce is only listed at 6’0″ and 163 pounds, which means he needs to either grow or put on more pounds to compete with tall, physical WRs in the Big 12. Boyce might start on special teams blocking or returning kicks before seeing playing time on defense.
