Texas Quarterback – Sam Ehlinger

Sam Ehlinger has wanted to be a Longhorn since he was a kid. He is the #4-ranked dual-threat QB in ESPN’s rankings and he will give Tom Herman something to think about for the identity of the 2017 season.

Ehlinger is following in the footsteps of sophomore QB Shane Buechele, who also enrolled early before the 2016 football season.

During Longhorn Network’s coverage of 2017 National Signing Day, Buechele was asked about the competition from Ehlinger. Buechele said he welcomes the competition because he believes he cannot improve unless he has someone pushing him from behind.

It will be interesting to see how Herman and new Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck use (or do not use) Ehlinger. If Buechele is the clear starter in the new offense, then Ehlinger might red-shirt. That would lead to sophomore QB Matthew Merrick backing up Buechele.

But, if the coaching staff believes that Ehlinger is a great fit for the offense, just like Buechele was last year under OC Sterling Gilbert, then Ehlinger might be one snap away from playing QB in his freshman season.
