(1) Georgia Bulldogs. 1983 was one of the greatest years in Texas Longhorns sports history. The Longhorns baseball team won the College World Series and National Title led by Roger Clemens. Then, the Longhorns football team went undefeated and was ranked #2 at the end of the 1983 college football regular season.

This set the stage for the 1984 Cotton Bowl on January 2, 1984. Texas held a 9-3 lead over the Georgia Bulldogs with just a few minutes left in the game. Then, Longhorns punt returner Craig Curry fumbled a punt, giving Georgia the ball deep in Texas territory. Georgia scored a TD to win the game 10-9.

The series of events cost the Longhorns the National Title. On the same day, #1 ranked Nebraska lost to Miami 31-30 in the Orange Bowl. The Longhorns were #2 behind Nebraska almost the entire season. And they finally would have vaulted past the Cornhuskers to win the National Title with an undefeated season.

But, Texas’ loss to Georgia cost the Longhorns their first National Title in 14 years. It meant Texas had to wait another 21 years to win the National Title with Vince Young.

Therefore, it’s time for Texas and Georgia to meet again in a non-conference series to avenge the 1984 Cotton Bowl.

Interestingly, Texas had a 3-0 record against the Bulldogs before the infamous Cotton Bowl. The Horns won the first-ever meeting in the 1949 Orange Bowl game. This set up a non-conference series one decade later.

In that home-and-home series, Texas won in Georgia to start the 1957 season, which was Darrell Royal’s first-ever game coaching the Longhorns. The Longhorns won again in Austin to kick off the 1958 football season.

But, that one game in Dallas trumped the 3-0 start to the series. It’s a dream matchup, it’s a battle of heavyweight college football teams, it’s Big 12 vs. SEC, and it needs to happen again. For the sake of Craig Curry.
