(5) Southwestern Pirates. Alright, alright, alright, we’re being really funny with the final pick here. Texas played so many random local teams in the late 1800s and early 1900s that we wanted to honor this group.
One of those was Southwestern in nearby Georgetown. Southwestern played competitive college football until 1951 when the program was cut. But, football was reinstated for the 2013 season and Southwestern currently plays at the DIII level.
Texas obviously is not going to play Southwestern in this era, but it’s interesting to think about a time when the two schools actually met.
Texas’ record against Southwestern was 20-2 during a stretch of games from 1908 to 1945. Southwestern’s only wins were the very first game in 1908 and in 1943 when Southwestern was actually ranked #11 in the country. But, after World War II, football disappeared for the next 60 years.
