5 Big Takeaways From Tom Herman’s UT Football Spring Presser
(1) Takeaway #1 – The Defensive Line Needs Help
Tom Herman established very early in the press conference that the defensive line concerns him the most about this year’s Texas roster.
Herman said they lacked effort during winter drills, are out of shape, and need to drop weight. He added that he cannot tell if they are good athletes because their bodies are covered by too much fat.
There was nothing left to interpretation from Herman – the D-Line needs help. This led to follow-up questions throughout the hour-long presser.
Asked if he’s concerned about the D-Line or Tight Ends more, Herman said definitely Defensive Line. He said the offense can work without the TE position by shifting players around, but you need Defensive Lineman to play football.
So, Coach Herman has challenged D-Line coach Oscar Giles to get the players motivated to find out if they can play football.
The challenge is finding some leaders on the line. Poona Ford is the only senior defensive lineman on the football roster, which will force other players to step up and address the unit’s off-season reputation.
