Takeaway #2 – The QB Position is Up For Grabs

Shane Buechele is not the incumbent starting QB for this year’s Texas team. As Tom Herman said, he has not watched tape from last year’s team, so he does not know how well Buechele can play. Or, how well he compares to incoming freshman QB Sam Ehlinger.

Tom Herman did reveal that he will likely name the starting QB early in fall camp. This will allow the team to know who the leader of the most important position in football is heading into the start of the season.

But, Herman does not expect to name a QB after spring practice. He said he wants to give the QBs a chance to win the position in the summer leading into training camp.

The traits he is looking for in a Tom Herman Texas QB are competitive, leader, football smarts, and someone whose teammates gravitate towards. As for playing the QB position, Herman is looking for someone who makes great decisions, makes great decisions consistently, and is accurate with the ball.

It remains to be seen if that person is Shane Buechele, Sam Ehlinger, or even one of the third-string QBs Matthew Merrick or Josh Covey.
