Takeaway #5 – The Longhorns Team Is Embarrassed About Recent Seasons

Tom Herman said he has not sensed much push-back from the Longhorns players as they have tried to install a new football culture in Austin.

Herman said they experienced some push-back at the University of Houston when they took over a good football team that just won a bowl game. But, this Texas squad is coming off three straight seven-loss seasons. So, they are embarrassed and ready to be molded into a championship football team.

Coach Herman said one of the key elements of establishing the culture is understanding what champions practice like. He said he draws inspiration from Michael Jordan to make practices so difficult and challenging that the actual games are easy.

Herman said winning championships is exhausting, but they have to make sure the players understand it’s worth it. He said every second of every day during this time period is what goes into winning football games in the fall.

He said they are asking 18-22-year-olds to self-sacrifice, experience pain and inconvenience, and be teachable. That means correcting mistakes – even the smallest mistakes – before they turn into larger problems.

The goal is changing how the players think. Otherwise, they become entitled, which was a big problem for Texas Football over the past seven season. Herman said he does not sense entitlement being a problem with this group because none of the seniors have even experienced a winning season.
