Kacy Clemens Becomes Texas Baseball Legend vs. A&M
Kacy Clemens, the son of Texas Baseball legend Roger Clemens, achieved legendary status on Tuesday night.
Senior Kacy Clemens entered Tuesday’s game against Texas A&M with a 2-2 career record against the Aggies. Two wins and one loss came in the 2014 Rice Regional of the NCAA Tournament, then a second loss was last year in College Station.
Clemens was not going to leave Texas with a losing record against A&M, and he made sure of it, as Texas won 4-3 Tuesday night in Austin.
Included was the Play of the Year for Texas Baseball preventing the Aggies from tying the game in the eighth inning. It was his way of telling the Longhorns to get on his back and ride him this season.
First, though, Clemens drove in Texas’ first run of the game with a sharp single to score freshman David Hamilton. This made the score 1-1 in the fifth and helped break the ice for the Horns after struggling at the plate in the first four innings.
Clemens then scored on the next at-bat when A&M starting throwing the ball away on their way to four errors and three unearned runs in the game.
Channeling his inner Justin Tucker, Clemens kicked the catcher’s mask off home plate so that he could cross the plate. It was a bit over-the-top, but as Kacy joked after the game, the mask was in the wrong place preventing him from scoring.
That was merely a set-up for an even bigger play at the plate later in the game. [ Full Game Box Score ]
Kacy Clemens Delivers Play of the Season
Texas took a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning when starter-turned-reliever Kyle Johnston started to fall apart. Johnston walked the bases loaded, then the Aggies plated two runs.
With the game 4-3, one out, and runners on the corners, A&M’s Tim Lichty attempted a squeeze bunt against closer Beau Ridgeway. But, Kacy Clemens charged the plate like Houston Astros Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell, grabbed the ball, and threw a strike to catcher Michael Cantu to tag out A&M’s Joel Davis at the plate.
The epic play kept the game 4-3, then Ridgeway retired the next hitter to retain the lead heading into the ninth inning.
Then again in the top of the ninth, Texas was in a jam. This time, reliever Chase Shugart was facing A&M’s best hitter, freshman Braden Shewmake, with the tying run on third base with two outs.
Chase induced a groundout to shortshop David Hamilton, who threw a strike to Kacy Clemens at first base to record the final out.
Kacy simply walked off first base with the Hook ‘Em Horns hand sign in the air, signaling that Texas got this one.
Last year, A&M beat Texas 5-4 in College Station. That game was also a wild Tuesday night in Texas held March 15, 2016.
One year later on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, the Longhorns were able to defend home turf in the rekindling of an old Texas rivalry.
