(1) Texas Football Was Not In Shape

Tom Herman opened his media availability confirming that backup QB Matt Merrick left the Texas Football program. He then jumped into a discussion about how shocked he was at how early the football team hit a wall in their first practice after Spring Break.

“I was a bit shocked at the level of – I was shocked at how early they hit the wall in terms of the practice. We could barely get through the special teams segment. And then I was shocked at the level of how hard it hit them,” Herman said.

However, Herman said he was “very, very pleased with the effort that was given to try to fight through it.”

Tom Herman entered this job with a completely fresh perspective on the football team. He did not watch film when he took over. And, he only caught a few of the Horns’ games last year when the Houston Cougars were not playing.

So, Herman is focused on building a team from scratch with zero influence from the past. That means pushing through the mental and physical side of Spring Football if players want to get playing time and opportunities, even if they were a starter last year.
