5 Shocking Takeaways from Tom Herman on State of Texas Football
(3) The QBs are Not Ready
The biggest topic of discussion was the QB situation, especially with Texas reportedly interested in former LSU QB Brandon Harris.
Coach Herman shocked us when he made it sound like neither Shane Buechele nor Sam Ehlinger is ready to be the Texas QB right now. Therefore, they need more bodies in the QB room, especially after Matthew Merrick left the program.
Asked whether it would hurt the long-term growth of Buechele and/or Ehlinger to not be the QB this coming season, Herman said “we gotta win.”
“We lost seven games three straight years around here. So, if that grad transfer is better than those two and can beat them out, then we’ll worry about their growth next spring,” Herman shockingly added.
But, Herman said he was encouraged by the response from both QBs when they discussed the possibility of a grad transfer (the unnamed Brandon Harris) joining the team.
“They understood. They were great. They were like, ‘Heck yeah.’ If you look around the room, there’s two guys in here who are on scholarship.”
Herman then praised sophomore back-up Josh Covey as a potential third-string option if a situation arose where they needed someone to get them out of a game with a win. Right now, QB-turned-WR Jerrod Heard is that available option. But, the overall picture captures why Herman wants to bring in another QB off the college football equivalent of the “waiver wire.”
