(5) Herman Was Shocked by Lack of Defensive TDs

Tom Herman was presented with this shocking fact from last season: the Texas defense and special teams scored 0 TDs in 2016. Meanwhile, the Houston Cougars had several under Herman and Alabama seemed to rack one up every other defensive series.

“Wow,” was Herman’s shocked response when presented with Texas’ non-offensive TD stat. So, how does he get this year’s team to actually score on defense?

“Honestly, it’s a trusting in your training. And, the ability to go out and not think and just play. That puts you a step ahead, rather than a step behind. When you’ve been trained mentally over and over, and your body is in great, peak condition and you stick your foot in the ground and go execute your training, really good things happen.

“When you’re out there thinking, tip-toeing, feeling around, or evaluating – you’re going to be a step or two behind.”

Unfortunately, the latter seemed to be part of Texas Football’s identity last year. The players seemed to be reacting instead of proactively hunting the ball or reading the QB.

Coach Herman is looking to change the culture of Texas Football by getting the players to push through the wall, be physical, be ready to compete, get in shape, and be mentally prepared for championship-level football.
