Tom Herman continues to be frustrated by the Texas Football team during the 2017 Spring Football session.

In his latest media availability, Tom Herman talked about what frustrated him and who impressed him from the Texas Football team during Saturday’s scrimmage.

Based on his comments, Coach Herman is looking for more effort from the Longhorns. And, he feels like he shouldn’t have to ask for maximum effort in a scrimmage simulating a real game.

Perhaps most concerning is the clock is counting down to the Texas Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 15. And, the Horns only have a few more practices until fans get their first look at Herman’s team.

But, not all was a loss on Saturday, as Tom Herman may have found himself a RB in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Tom Herman – Texas Football High of the Week

Coach Herman praised third-string RB Kyle Porter for his effort in Saturday’s scrimmage. Porter was placed in the starter’s role due to injuries to Chris Warren and superstar freshman Toneil Carter. And, Porter came through.

“He was player of the game in the scrimmage on Saturday and he runs hard,” Coach Herman said of Porter, who was named Offensive Freak of the Week.

“Kyle never complains, never asks for a play off, always goes full speed, always diving. He makes yards as he’s getting tackled, he never gets driven backwards so he’s been a joy to be around so far.” (Quotes from TexasSports.com)

This was especially refreshing for Herman because the offensive line “is taking a while to adjust” to the Texas Defense.

So, Porter being able to run so effectively despite the O-Line struggling made the sophomore from Katy stand out even more.

Now the question is whether the RB spot is Kyle Porter’s to win, even after Chris Warren and Toneil Carter return to full strength? We have an interesting new Spring Football storyline to follow.

Tom Herman – Texas Football Low of the Week

On the flipside, Coach Herman said he held a “long team meeting” to discuss the overall lack of effort in Saturday’s scrimmage. Herman did not single out particular players or units, but he clearly wants to see more from everyone.

“We all need to work. Saturday was not great, we all had a long team meeting today to address a lot of sub-maximal effort and when we’re in a live scrimmage situation it is unacceptable to give anything other than your maximum effort,” Coach Herman said.

“So we need to keep playing and instill in them and applaud and praise those who do well and those that exemplify our culture and then point out those that don’t and make sure that they’re being taught what the expectations are around here every single play.” (Quotes from TexasSports.com)

Under Tom Herman, the Spring Football practice culture is about more than just learning the offense and defense. It’s about those Championship Habits that Herman likes to talk about.

And, for seven years, Texas has not played at that level. That means Texas has gone through almost two entire cycles of recruits and players who have not experienced championship football. So, it will take some time to rebuild Texas Football mentally.

Coach Herman is clearly looking for more results as the Horns build to the Spring Game on April 15. Who will step up like Kyle Porter and give that max effort?
