Texas Football is a little more than one week away from the 2017 Texas Spring Football Game.

Leading up to the Spring Football Game, here are a few updates on the State of Texas Football.

(1) Shane Buechele Remains QB Leader

Shane Buechele is the leader in the QB clubhouse for the moment. Last week, Tom Herman made it clear that Buechele has edged ahead of incoming freshman Sam Ehlinger.

This week, Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck talked about Buechele emerging as a leader of the new-look Texas Football program.

"“I think the players do gravitate around him. I think he is a competitor. He’s a very cool customer. That’s one of the things I’ve learned. He doesn’t always show his emotion on his sleeve. He’s hard on himself, and he’s a professional. He wants to be really good and the best that he can be. He just doesn’t wear it on his sleeve and jump up and down and those type of things.I’m trying to let him know it’s okay to play with passion and emotion and allow that to show. I think he’s learning it because the harder you work, the more you put into it, the harder it is to let go of it. So when things don’t go well, or when they go well, there’s a little bit added spark to it because you worked hard for that. It’s a good thing, let’s enjoy that. Or we worked really hard, we should’ve been better than that. I see that developing in him.” – OC Tim Beck on Buechele via TexasSports.com"

Now, Tom Herman and OC Tim Beck want to see Buechele’s qualities translate to this upcoming week of Spring Football. That work culminates with the Texas Spring Football Game next Saturday, April 15.

Texas fans will still get a look at Ehlinger on Apr. 15 to compare the two young QBs. But, Buechele seems to be taking advantage of his freshman season starting all 12 games for the Longhorns.

(2) P.J. Locke Continues to Lead Texas Football

After getting around the Texas Football team for a few months, the first player Tom Herman strongly praised was P.J. Locke.

That continued Thursday when Herman announced P.J. Locke as the Student of the Month for Texas Football.

The junior from Beaumont has established himself as one of the leaders of a DB unit full of juniors and seniors who have battled through a lot of growing pains.

Locke said in a recent video feature that the new coaching staff brought him out of his comfort zone. The purpose was for him to lead the defense vocally, not just by example. And, the coaches have appreciated his effort.

(3) Tight Ends Coach in the Spotlight

Longhorn Network released a new video feature on TE coach Corby Meekins, who came over to Texas from Houston with Tom Herman.

Coach Meekins was assuredly glad to see TE Kendall Moore transfer to Texas from Syracuse to help fill a major positional need.

As part of the LHN feature, Coach Meekins talked about his expectations for a thin Tight End group, his journey with Coach Herman through the years, and some interesting Texas high school football stories.

Coach Meekins and the Texas Coaching Staff will be on full display at the Spring Football Game. There is no confirmation yet on whether Meekins’ new player Kendall Moore will be part of the game.
