NFL Draft Team Needs: D’Onta Foreman Could Land with These Teams
Texas Longhorns RB D’Onta Foreman will fill an NFL team’s need at the running back position in the NFL Draft this week.
The question is which NFL team places a higher value on D’Onta Foreman to select him in the second round or perhaps even third round of the NFL Draft.
The New Orleans Saints would have been a good fit for Foreman. But two days before the Draft, the Saints reportedly agreed to a deal with former Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson.
There are still plenty of teams that need RBs, including the three teams that are projected landing spots for Foreman in the Draft: Green Bay, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. But, what other teams need a RB?
Where Does D’Onta Foreman Fill NFL Team Needs?
We’re going by the NFL.com list of Team Needs to see where Foreman could land in the Draft. Going in order of draft position…
Carolina Panthers
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Jonathan Stewart (824 yards)
- Second Leading Rusher: Cam Newton (359 yards)
Carolina already has a former Texas RB Fozzy Whittaker in the backfield. But, the Panthers might want to add a bruising RB to mix in with Stewart and Whittaker.
D’Onta Foreman would fit the bill and help provide some depth to the position to take the load off QB Cam Newton. This is interesting.
Philadelphia Eagles
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Ryan Mathews (661 yards)
- Second Leader: Darren Sproles (438 yards)
The Eagles also mixed in Wendell Smallwood during the 2016 season. But, none of their three featured backs came close to 1,000 yards last year.
D’Onta Foreman would have to beat out three players to get playing time, but if he wowed the Eagles during his Texas Pro Day performance, he could be an interesting pick in the second or third round.
Baltimore Ravens
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Terrance West (774 yards)
- Second Leader: Kenneth Dixon (382 yards)
This seems like the best opportunity for D’Onta Foreman to make an immediate impact. The Ravens signed Danny Woodhead in the offseason, but Foreman and Woodhead are completely different RBs.
The Ravens have two picks in the middle of the third round. So, if Foreman is still on the board mid-way through Round 3, this could be the pick.
Washington Redskins
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Robert Kelley (704 yards)
- Second Leader: Matt Jones (460 yards)
Kelley had a breakout rookie season last year after he went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft. This year, Washington might look to use a draft pick on a RB.
The Redskins are selecting in the middle of the Draft, like the Ravens, so it will be interesting to see if one of these two teams selects Foreman.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Jacquizz Rodgers (560 yards)
- Second Leading Rusher: Doug Martin (421 yards)
The Bucs need a RB to help take the pressure of Jameis Winston.
Doug Martin had more carries than Rodgers, but Martin only averaged 2.9 yards per carry during the season. D’Onta Foreman could add some versatility to the backfield to help out Winston.
Just like the Ravens and Skins, the Bucs are picking in the middle of the Draft. This will be very interesting to see if Foreman lands somewhere in the middle of the second or third rounds.
Green Bay Packers
- 2016 Leading Rusher: Ty Montgomery (457 yards)
- Second Leading Rusher: Aaron Rodgers (369 yards)
The Packers’ running game was pitiful to non-existent throughout last season. It’s why Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was the second-leading rusher (369) ahead of Eddie Lacy (360 yards). And, why Rodgers threw the ball 610 times last year.
During the offseason, the Packers re-signed RB Christine Michael after signing him late in the 2016 season. But, the Packers need stability at this position. Foreman could be that player.
Wild Card NFL Teams?
This is the NFL Draft, where anything can happen. So, there might be a wild card team in the NFL Draft who simply goes for “best available player” on their Draft board.
Perhaps its the hometown Houston Texans to add depth behind last year’s free agent signing Lamar Miller. Or, a team like the N.Y. Giants who Foreman worked out for during the offseason.
