Texas Football: SWOT Analysis two months away from 2017 opener
2017 Texas Football Season Strengths
Quarterback
As Colt McCoy said in a recent interview, the strength of this football team is the quarterback position.
Shane Buechele is ready to rock.
And, if Buechele stumbles or gets injured, highly touted freshman Sam Ehlinger is ready to roll, too.
Now, this could turn into a weakness if the Longhorns lose either Buechele or Ehlinger since Tom Herman has not been able to find a graduate transfer QB.
But, we’re confident in Buechele and/or Ehlinger to be the strength of this Texas Football team, leading the turnaround.
Depth at Wide Receiver
Texas is absolutely loaded with Wide Receivers.
But, which one will emerge as the go-to, gotta-have-it, fourth-down-to-win-a-game Wide Receiver?
Right now, it looks like sophomore Collin Johnson.
Also on the roster are seniors Armanti Foreman and Dorian Leonard and Lorenzo Joe, junior QB turned WR Jerrod Heard, speedster Devin Duvernay, junior track star John Burt, sophomore Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and impressive freshmen Davion Curtis and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps.
That’s some serious talent.
If Collin Johnson emerges as the No. 1 WR, then any number of these receivers will serve as great complements to Johnson.
Depth at Linebacker
Just like the WR position, Texas is loaded at the linebacker spot.
And you know Defensive Coordinator Todd Orlando loves that.
At the University of Houston, DC Orlando used his linebackers in all kinds of exciting and productive ways to create havoc and disruption.
Now, Orlando gets to work with:
- Malik Jefferson
- Edwin Freeman
- Naashon Hughes
- Breckyn Hager
- Anthony Wheeler
- Demarco Boyd
- No. 1 JUCO transfer LB Gary Johnson
This is the strength of the defense. And, it falls in line with Orlando’s strength coaching defense.
Look for Texas Football to be mean, nasty, competitive, and productive at the LB spot in 2017.
