Texas Football: Top 15 all-time Longhorns quarterbacks
Top All-Time Texas Football Quarterbacks – Number 3: James Street (1967-69)
Career stats: 1,845 passing yards, 10 TDs, 24 INTs, 48.9 completion %, 110 passer rating, 815 rushing yards, 10 rushing TDs
Despite the program’s ridiculously lengthy history, James Street went down as one of the first truly great quarterbacks. We have to remember that this was during a time that passing wasn’t the key to success it is today.
That’s why the stats aren’t all that impressive. These days, a 10:24 touchdown-to-interception ratio wouldn’t be possible — a quarterback would be benched before he got anywhere near those numbers. And yet, here we are talking about Street as one of the all-time greats to take snaps for Texas.
So why does he deserve the recognition? Let’s ask the 20-0 record he had as a starter. Or maybe the National Championship he led the Longhorns to in 1969. Perhaps you can watch his performance during the 1969 Cotton Bowl if you’re not convinced — it was a doozy.
Some of the younger, more casual Texas fans won’t have any clue who Street is. If they’re invested in rooting on the Longhorns in the future, though, it’s about time they learned the name. He may have played almost half a century ago, but you can’t talk about the greatest quarterbacks to ever come through Austin without mentioning Street’s name.
